Sometimes you may find a car driving near you making entirely too much noise, most likely that car has a damaged exhaust system or a missing their muffler. A Muffler is used on internal combustion engines to lessen the amount of noise the engine makes.
A muffler is specially tuned to lessen the noise coming from the motor due to a remarkable feat of engineering, creating destructive interference to offset the engine noise. Mufflers are also used to reduce back pressure which decreases wear on the engine and boosts efficiency.
To begin we must learn why we hear the noise from the engine the way we do. The motor’s exhaust valves open and allow high pressure exhaust gases to escape into the exhaust system. Low pressure waves already in the exhaust stack with the high pressure waves and exit the exhaust system. Your eardrums vibrate when these sound waves reach them, which is how we hear the noise from a car engine.
By having a sound wave that is opposite the original sound wave, which is the simple description of a muffler’s function, the two sound waves then cancel each other out. The first sound wave is at its lowest point as the first sound wave is at its highest point, so your eardrum does not register the noise.
The muffler is designed and built in such a way that sound will be redirected before leaving the muffler. A secondary chamber inside the unit is a specified length and contains a specific amount of air that is calculated to create a wave to cancel out the sound wave from an engine.
Some mufflers function a different way, due to a different configuration. A cherry bomb or glass pack is the name of a muffler that uses a pipe filled with holes, wrapped in glass insulation and surrounded by a steel cover. Not as effective as the other type of muffler, it does not deaden the engine noise as much. People that want higher performance from their engine often choose to use this type of muffler.
A new type of muffler is being developed that will use microphones, a speaker and a computer to muffle engine exhaust noises. This sophisticated system is known as active noise canceling. The first microphone picks up the exhaust noise, the computer generates a noise to cancel the original sound wave. The second microphone listens and reports back to the computer so any needed adjustments can be made. These systems are mainly used on industrial generators today.
