What Does a Muffler Do? And What Are the Disadvantages of a Muffler?

Mufflers are usually attached to the exhaust pipe and are the last part of the emissions system. A muffler is made of metal and tends to sit beneath the rear bumper on the right hand side of most cars. On many large trucks and diesel engine automobiles the pipe may be located above the cab of the truck. The reduction of sound is not the only purpose of the muffler in that is the pathway for harmful gases to safely move from the engine of the car into the path behind the automobile.

The sound and gas from the engine is pushed through the emission system until it enters into the muffler. The sound is then interfered through a series of a serious of baffles in the middle of a resonation chamber. Even though there are baffles inside the muffler, the most common baffles are the sound barriers that are alongside highways near residential areas. The sound waves are bounced around inside the muffler until two of them hit each other. This redirection and cancellation cause the sounds to cancel each other out so that the sound is decreased immensely through the actions of the muffler. What are the disadvantages of a muffler?

Some people do have a problem with the muffler though. Many people feel that the muffler causes undue pressure on the engine by trying to push the exhaust through the emission system too hard. This is usually countered by the energy lost by the sound escaping into the surrounding environment. So some people decide to take the matter into their own hands by changing up the emissions system a little bit. These people first take off the factory muffler that came with their car. The car owner then goes out and purchases a version of the muffler that doesn’t require as much energy to push the exhaust through the emissions system. This is commonly called “lowering the back pressure.” This little fix-up tends to increase the power that the engine has to run the speed of the car, but it also increases the volume of sound coming from the car.

The muffler alternatives can be purchased from almost any store that sells anything to do with automotive supplies – even Wal-Mart sells these items. Sometimes they are sold at stores under the name Racing Exhaust and cost as little as 50 dollars. But in almost all aspects of life and shopping, you get what you pay for. There are also mufflers that cost well over 500 dollars. Mufflers are usually incredibly easy for people to replace or put new ones on, but if you don’t know much about cars then you can get almost any shop to do it for you. Once again, know that these mufflers are going to increase the noise coming from your car for additional energy to your car. Make sure your neighbors are okay with this…
